USA Education System:

American education system is bit extremely dissimilar from the education system of your native country. The educational available in this country are fabulous especially in the higher level. Basically, the USA education system comprises of 12 complete years of primary and secondary education before getting admission in the university or graduate college. It is not necessary that these 12 years of basic education must be completed from within USA and hence, students from other countries are also welcome for higher education. The highlight of USA education system is its adaptability of cutting-edge technology in all the fields of study. In addition to this truth, another impressive element about US education system is that many world leaders, bureaucrats and prominent business tycoons cherish the education system of the country after studying from there.

Needless to say, acquiring an educational experience from the land of USA will drive people to a magnificent and brilliant career life. The education of US starts at the age of five in the 'primary school'. After completing five grades, the student will enter 'secondary school' to get the 'high school diploma' after successful completion of twelve grades. Those who complete high school and would like to attend college or university must attend 'undergraduate' school. These are schools that offer either a two-year degree (Associate Degree) or a four-year degree in a specific course of study. The course of study is called the 'major', which comprises of the main or special subjects.

The next level of education system in the US is 'graduate school'. After getting the undergraduate degree, the education can be continued for next two levels. The first one is, studying to get 'master's degree' as an extended specialized study of the subject taken up in the under graduation course. It is of two years duration. The next level is to pursue PhD that leads to a doctorate degree. The minimum duration for this is about three years and may vary up to even seven to eight years depending upon the specialized and chosen topic and the ability of students in presenting their thesis.

Types of Degrees:

 Associate Degree:
Associate degrees are awarded after two years of undergraduate study at some colleges and universities. At associate-level, majors are usually in vocational areas such as health sciences, computer information systems, accounting, graphic design, catering and hospitality management.

Associate degrees are a great choice if you do not want to commit to four years studying abroad in the USA. You can earn an American degree within two years, paying less than for a bachelor's degree.

On completion, you can join the third year of a program at a four-year university, and earn a Bachelor's degree after two further years of study.

Bachelors Degree:
The most common type of undergraduate program is a Bachelor's degree, awarded after four years of successful study. There is a huge choice of subjects at Bachelor's-level

Depending on your major, the degree you earn will usually be a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS). However, some universities also offer other types of degree such as Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) etc.

Graduate Degree:
Graduate Schools and specialized colleges (Ex: College of Engineering, College of Management etc.) offer various degree programs such as Engineering, Arts and Sciences at the post-graduate level, leading to Master’s and Doctoral level degrees. These degrees are called the ‘Master of Arts (M.A), Master of Sciences (M.S), duration of the Master’s level programs are of two years and Doctoral level are of four years duration.

Doctorate:
Admission into Doctoral level programs is possible normally after completion of Master’s. However, US universities are flexible in admitting even those with a Bachelor’s degree. But, the length of program might be longer than for those with a Master’s degree. Typically, the duration of Doctoral level programs is between 3 and 6 years, depending on the field of research and university. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) duration range from one to five years, depending upon the course and level of study.

Is USA the right choice:

If you are thinking of applying to a US University, you have to consider few things before taking on application process?

At first, you will need to define your goal and set your career priorities. This will help you in choosing ‘right program and right school’. USA degree are recognized world over,
Evaluate your funds if you could meet the study and stay cost in the USA. The US offers both scholarships and study loans to International students, and students are allowed to work on part time basis to meet the study and stay cost.
If you do not have sufficient funds make sure that you may get scholarships or study loans or grab for a job if required or how else you shall meet the study expenditures if you shall not get scholarship / study loan / job.
The study and living cost vary in different United States, hence choosing a right program in a right college is of utmost importance.
According to the Web site for NAFSA: Association of International Educators- ‘81 percent of international students studying at the Undergraduate level in the United States receive no assistance to pay for their education. At the graduate level 47 percent must fund their own education’.
